It’s that time of the year again – in July, the month of Mandela’s birthday, businesses all over South Africa engage in their 67 minutes of community service.

“By devoting 67 minutes of their time – one minute for every year of Mandela’s public service – people can make a small gesture of solidarity with humanity and a step towards a global movement for good.”

At Old Shanghai Events Company, we spent a lot of time trying to decide what would be the best way that we could engage in this initiative. We went from ideas like making hot chocolate at our nearest intersection to hand out to motorists, donating at a children’s home in our community, spending time in an animal shelter in our community to making sandwiches for the homeless. We finally decided on making lunch packs for people in our immediate community – people that we see every day at the traffic lights and in the shopping centre, people who form part of our daily lives.

We also wanted our staff to participate in this event, so we turned our Steamroom into a sandwich-making factory for 67 minutes!

We built 100 sandwiches with 200 slices of chicken, 3kg of cheese, a ton of fruit, juices and bags of crisps!

67 minutes making

Once we packed the lunch packs, we loaded up the bakkie, and followed Sonny (our Production Assistant) on foot, and handed them out to 100 people within our community.

The response was amazing! It was a very successful 67 minutes and probably took about 67 seconds to distribute! It also made us realise how simple acts of kindness can make a massive difference!

Someone needs your 67 Minutes, make it count!
